CREAM OF THE CROP GETS NALEDI NOD

There were not many surprises in the list of final nominees for the 2011 Naledi Awards. While the cream of the theatrical crop may be represented in this year’s categories, it will certainly be a battle of the best in each category when the 9th Annual Naledi Theatre Awards grace the magnificent Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City on Monday, 5 March. The spectacular staging of “Dreamgirls” leads the pack in the musicals categories with no less than 10 nominations, followed by the brilliant “Mandela Trilogy” and the whacky “Pirates of Penzance” with eight enthusiastic nods each. Nataniel’s dynamic “Combat”, Pieter Toerien’s ...

THE PARLOTONES - A ROCKING GOOD TIME

Moira de Swardt 12/09/2011 09:55:48 Moira de Swardt: The Mzansi Fela festival brought The Parlotones to the State Theatre where a good time was had by all. I was at two “rock” concerts last week. Those who know me may find this a little surprising, as I am not known for my knowledge and appreciation of anything more modern than Queen, but I really enjoyed myself at both. The way my attendance at “The Parlotones” came about is that someone from the State Theatre was telling me about their coup in securing this band for the Mzansi Fela Festival. She offered me tickets. ...

AFRO LOUNGE AT STATE THEATRE

Moira de Swardt 12/10/2011 09:00:47 Moira de Swardt: A perfect place to unwind while one waits for traffic to clear from the State Theatre parking. The State Theatre has had several restaurants over the years, but none of them actually seem to make a go of it. They seem to become tatty so quickly, and Capellos was as awful after a while as its predecessor, so it was not with very high hopes that I stepped into the Afro Lounge. Wow! Was I in for a surprise! The décor is attractive and understated. Upstairs are lots of little conversational spaces, the “lounge” in ...

LIRA IS A CLASS ACT

Moira de Swardt 12/12/2011 Moira de Swardt: A slick two and a half hours with this thoroughly professional and hardworking artist left me elated. Lira is a legend. She has 41 558 followers on Twitter as at Sunday 11 December at 07:00. That probably makes her the one of the more “followed” people on the South African section of the Twitter network. Being much admired by the masses doesn't always mean that one has anything to commend one. In fact, quite often the reverse is true. But Lira really lives up to her reputation as being a fantastic entertainer. Performing live at the ...
