Upmarket African restaurant

The passion for food and the need for an upmarket African restaurant in the Pretoria CBD influenced the idea of an eatery that our patrons and patrons of the theatre could call home. Afro Lounge Kitchen Bar is a restaurant and cocktail lounge with private dining and lounge areas that offers an environment where people can meet, relax, network and dine. The menu made up of Pan-African cuisine offers breakfast, soulful lunch and dinner.
The restaurant is situated at The South African State Theatre on the corner of Helen Joseph and Sisulu Street, Pretoria, with the main entrance on the ground floor on street level.

Reviving African music

Promoting and preserving indigenous African music in its diversity, is the driving force behind charitable cultural music organisation, the Vusi Mahlasela Music Development Foundation. This is achieved through our range of modern music development programmes.

The VMMDF is the initiative of award winning and internationally established South African recording artist Vusi Mahlasela. The foundation was established in late 1998, and its Trust Fund was registered in 2000.The foundation was registered as section 21, in June 2202.

All our tutors are incredible professionals who have established themselves in their own right and who are very committed to the organisation.

Our organisation aims to:

  • Revive interest among South African musicians for playing, investing in and recording with traditional African instruments such as the kora, mbira and marimba.
  • Develop a workable music training curriculum which will cater for intemediate, advanced and special training of musicians who are interested in contributing towards promoting African cultural music. The training academy will be professionally run and managed.
  • Conduct a series of music workshops for the benefit of musicians. Workshops will be facilitated be established musicians and enhanced by the contribution of visiting overseas musicians.
  • Create development projects that will include outreach projects to be carried out for the benefit of school children in townships and rural areas. This will be done in association with the Department of Education of the relevant provinces.

We offer the following:

  • Music theory
  • Music practical
  • Aural general musicianship
  • Music workshops
  • Vocal Coaching

The foundation has developed a curriculum with a prominent university. The university will procure the necessary accreditation of the foundation courses with SAQA (South African Qualification Authority) towards degrees and diploma studies.

Free workshops are conducted by our tutors every Friday between 09h00 and 16h00 for the learners. Occasionally other artists and celebrities are invited to the workshop to share their knowledge and skills.

VMMDF has hosted a number of events since inception in 2001, which include:

African Nights Live Music Shows at the State Theatre – a series of shows featuring developing groups sharing the stage with established musicians. The shows ran at the State Theatre from July to December 2002. It was then adopted by Mr. Pat Ranoto and in 2010 and 2011 VMMDF the jazz band was one of the groups featured.
