While the cream of the theatrical crop may be represented in this year’s categories, it will certainly be a battle of the best in each category when the 9th Annual Naledi Theatre Awards grace the magnificent Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City on Monday, 5 March.

The spectacular staging of “Dreamgirls” leads the pack in the musicals categories with no less than 10 nominations, followed by the brilliant “Mandela Trilogy” and the whacky “Pirates of Penzance” with eight enthusiastic nods each.

Nataniel’s dynamic “Combat”, Pieter Toerien’s bonzai musical “JC Superstar” and Deon Opperman’s original work “Tree Aan” received 6 nominations each.

The best production of a play includes Aubrey Sekhabi’s uncompromising production of “The Rivonia Trial” (first staged in 2010 but not included then) with 9 nominations, and Alan Swerdlow’s immaculately directed “The History Boys” with 6 nominations.

The best performance by an actor in a lead role includes Brian Webber in a sensitive portrayal of a gay prisoner in “Kiss of a Spiderwoman”; the masterly Graham Hopkins as the controversial teacher in “The History Boys”; Sello Maake ka Ncube’s dignified and restrained performance as Mandela in “The Rivonia Trial”; and Isidingo star, Stephen van Niekerk in “The Crucible”, a lucid production at the Joburg Promusica Theatre in Roodepoort directed by Alby Michaels.

Best performance by an actress in a lead role includes diva Annabel Linder as the matriarch in “The Table”, Noxolo Tshabangu’s unforgettable performance in “Loving Lulu”, and Robyn Scott who was absolutely endearing in “London Road”.

Best director of a play or musical includes some of the country’s best: Aubrey Sekhabi for “The Rivonia Trial”, Alan Swerdlow for “The History Boys”, Christopher Weare for “Decadence”, Greg Homann for “Pirates of Penzance”, and Cape Town’s Lara Bye for “London Road”.

A complex category is that of the creators and curators of Musical Excellence, and this year sees several contributors nominated together for composing scores, arrangements and musical direction, all of which are amalgamated to create the world class music heard on our Gauteng stages during 2011. Original scores were created for the “Mandela Trilogy”, “Tree Aan”, “The Table” and Nataniel’s “Combat”. Other scores include “The Pirates of Penzance” and “Dreamgirls”.

The judges for this year’s awards are certainly going have a gruelling task ahead of them, but all will be revealed in a glittering awards ceremony with Alan Committie as MC and entertainment by Gloria Bosman singing a medley from “Mandela Trilogy” accompanied by Bryan Schimmel, both nominees. The evening will not only be filled with suspense, but with fun too. Other performances will include pop singer Nádine, nominated for her debut performance in JC Superstar, performing “I don’t know how to love Him”; “Listen” from Dreamgirls, performed by Lindiwe Bungane and Tracey-Lee Oliver - again accompanied by Bryan Schimmel; and “Ek Staan Wag Oor Jou Hart” from “Tree Aan” performed by Nadia Beukes and Vaughn Gardiner.

Suitably, Cinderella and her Prince Charming will be appearing at the glamorous Naledi Awards. From Janice Honeyman’s latest all-star pantomime “Cinderella”; a duet performed by Carmen Pretorius and Bongi Mthombeni, a Top 10 finalist in Idols SA 2010. With them, dancing on stage will be Joburg Theatre’s cutest ballroom champions; child ballroom dancers from Richman Dance School in Orange Farm, who also featured in the Joburg Theatre production of “Cinderella”.

“The Naledis won’t be complete without some serious send up and laughter,” says Executive Director Dawn Lindberg, “which will be provided by Off-Beat Broadway in “Les Mini Miz”, starring Anton Luitingh, Lindy Abromowitz and Paul du Toit.

“Once again top celebrities from our stages will don their glam gowns to present the Awards and each winner will receive a newly designed trophy by Chris Drake of Cubed Models as well as a cash cheque,” said Dawn, “thanks to generous funding from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, and which we are holding fingers and toes will continue for the next few years.”

“The use of the Lyric Theatre and all technical staff have been sponsored for three years by Gold Reef City, for which we are eternally grateful, as this is surely one of the most beautiful theatres not only in Gauteng, but in SA,” enthused Dawn.

“We also honour those who have passed onto the Great Stage In The Sky over the past year, Community Theatre, Children’s Theatre and two Life Time Achievement Awards will be given to legendary veterans of our stages.”

The event will be filmed by Phonicart Media and edited into a 90-minute special for television.

“We are currently negotiating with a very hot channel,” hints Dawn.

The Naledi Theatre Awards Ceremony and cocktail event is open to the public and tickets may be bought directly from the Lyric Theatre 011 248 5168 / Box.Office@grcc.co.za at R150 per person, all inclusive of the most exciting and glamorous event on the SA theatre calendar.

12/09/2011 09:55:48

Moira de Swardt: The Mzansi Fela festival brought The Parlotones to the State Theatre where a good time was had by all.

I was at two “rock” concerts last week. Those who know me may find this a little surprising, as I am not known for my knowledge and appreciation of anything more modern than Queen, but I really enjoyed myself at both.

The way my attendance at “The Parlotones” came about is that someone from the State Theatre was telling me about their coup in securing this band for the Mzansi Fela Festival. She offered me tickets. I said “No, thank you” at exactly the same moment as the person with me said “Yes, please”. On the way home he played me some of their music. When the formal invitation arrived I accepted.

The Parlotones is a rock band comprising four boys, Glenn Hodgson (bass guitar, piano, backing vocals), Paul Hodgson (Iead guitar, keyboard), Kahn Morbee (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Neil Pauw (drums) from Johannesburg. They are still based in Johannesburg, but tour extensively overseas these days. They have achieved multiplatinum-selling status here in their home country with genres apparently known as Indie Rock, New Wave and Post Punk.

I confess my ignorance of these, but based on the principle of “I know what I like when I hear it”, I liked this.

The Parlotones have a passion for ecology and are, together with Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Prince Charles and Rihanna, spokespersons for both Live Earth and Earth Hour.

They have had wines named after their songs, a red wine is named “Giant Mistake”, a white wine is named “Push Me to the Floor” and a rose is named “We Call this Dancing”. The number “Push Me to the Floor” saw a five year old fan up on stage singing the chorus with them, after which they officially ended the concert with this number, although they did three encore numbers after this.

One of the good things about having a rock audience in, was that for many of them it was the first time they had been in a theatre. The down side was that there was a lot of walking in and out, buying of refreshments and general behaviour which is not usually seen in the hallowed Opera space.

I had a rocking good time. My escort for the evening had an even better time. He was suitably impressed with the invitation in the first place, and super impressed when he got their signatures afterwards on one of the show posters. He's a real fan, one who buys and listens to their music, attends their shows and loves them. He's educating me and if I am not yet a die-hard fan, I acknowledge that I enjoyed them enough to want to listen to them again – provided that they definitely sing “Push Me to the Floor”.

The Mzansi Fela Festival runs at The State Theatre, Pretoria, from 1 December to 11 December.

12/10/2011 09:00:47

Moira de Swardt: A perfect place to unwind while one waits for traffic to clear from the State Theatre parking.

The State Theatre has had several restaurants over the years, but none of them actually seem to make a go of it. They seem to become tatty so quickly, and Capellos was as awful after a while as its predecessor, so it was not with very high hopes that I stepped into the Afro Lounge. Wow! Was I in for a surprise!

The décor is attractive and understated. Upstairs are lots of little conversational spaces, the “lounge” in Afro Lounge. Downstairs are formal tables for eating. Lovely Afro-centric art fills the walls and the map of Africa on the landing on the stairs between the lounge and the more formal dining area is lovely. There is a garden with a water feature for the smokers.

The door between the garden and the lounge where I sat was open and I sat close to the garden, so I expected to be able to smell smoke, but not a whiff intruded to spoil my meal.

After my order was taken and before my food was served, I was presented with a basin in which to wash my hands. Warm water was poured over them and they were then dried. This is often done in “African” themed restaurants. Incidentally, it is an authentic, although very rural African custom, a symbol of hospitality and a practical gesture in a society where running water is literally not “on tap”. It is labour intensive where both water and fuel needs to be gathered and the first time I experienced this custom was in Nongoma, the home of the Zulu king (although I was not visiting royal houses, but very simple kraals).

The food is contemporary Afro-fusion food and I had the lime chicken breast and salad (R62) with a side order of rice (R25). This is a light meal and with a cold drink (R16) it was adequate to sustain me for the evening. Sadly the chicken was somewhat tough and although it was prettily presented. It also had no particular flavour of lime or anything else. The salad was a bed of lettuce with green, red and yellow peppers with onions, green olives and feta cheese and it was delicious. The rice tasted overwhelmingly of tomato paste but it was very nicely cooked to al dente. I was given a side plate with my cutlery and paper napkin (upmarket restaurants have no business using paper napkins) and when I lifted the napkin the plate had an enormous chip out of it.

The ambience was welcoming and leisurely, the music soft, the service was courteous, prompt, efficient and the toilets were well maintained. Let me mention the friendly and dignified service again. I felt as if I were visiting a royal kraal, or as if I was royalty visiting the Afro Lounge. It more than compensated for a less than perfect meal.

The Afro Lounge is situated between the Drama and Opera at the State Theatre, cnr Prinsloo and Church Streets Pretoria. They are open seven days a week from 9:00 till late and they have a breakfast menu as well as their other meals. 12/12/2011

Moira de Swardt: A slick two and a half hours with this thoroughly professional and hardworking artist left me elated.

Lira is a legend. She has 41 558 followers on Twitter as at Sunday 11 December at 07:00. That probably makes her the one of the more “followed” people on the South African section of the Twitter network. Being much admired by the masses doesn't always mean that one has anything to commend one. In fact, quite often the reverse is true. But Lira really lives up to her reputation as being a fantastic entertainer.

Performing live at the State Theatre for the Mzansi Fela Festival, she brought an upbeat and inspirational message to her fans. It is about loving oneself and allowing oneself to be who one is. Allowing oneself to be best at what one does. She certainly lives that out. Her performance was superb. She lit up the stage as a performer. Every step was choreographed, every word was rehearsed. The lighting was perfect, the backing band was superb (I didn't catch their names because the sound let her down a little bit and the audience was noisy.) The impression she conveys is of a wholesome, down to earth woman who is not afraid to make her stand, nor of the work it requires to be the star she is. There is an uncompromising integrity in her work.

Lira Molapo was born in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni on the East Rand, and she makes music in an eclectic mix of Afro-Jazz, RnB, soul and African traditional music. Her year of birth is not given, but I estimate it would be in the very late 70s or very early 80s by the fact that she enrolled at the Vaal Tech (now the Vaal University of Technology) in 1997 where she majored in Internal Auditing and Financial Accounting. She has been a full time artist since 2001.

Lira has been well known as a South African musician since at least 2003 when she released her first album, All My Love. In 2006 she released the Feel Good album which won an award for Best Music Video. In December 2008 she released the Soul in Mind album for which she received four awards: Best Female Artist, Album of the Year, Best Remix and Best Adult Contemporary Album. In January 2011 she released Return To Love. As she said during the performance, she can't perform all her numbers in concert unless she stays all night. Her audience was willing to let her stay all night.

Lira is physically beautiful with a sexy figure and a delightful sense of humour. Her strapless dress kept slipping during the vigorous moves she made on stage. Her comment? “My boobs seem to have shrunk”. She wins awards, appears on magazine covers and features in movies. However, as a live performer she does even better. She wins hearts. She certainly won mine.

The performance I saw took place at the Opera, State Theatre, Pretoria on 10 December 2011 as part of the Mzansi Fela Festival.

In this production Tshwane Dance Theatre returns with an unexpected, funky take on the Bard’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. Quarrelling Fairies, star-crossed lovers, mischievous imps, people in the wrong place at the wrong time, mists and magical flowers, all make up for a delightful romp of visual entertainment. Expect the unexpected, as you are drawn into a magical forest, with some of the most beautiful dancers, exquisitely dressed and made-up for an exciting explosion of colour and fun on the stage.

The antics of the lovers are certainly very visual, and the grace and lightness one associates with a fairy such as Titania are qualities that both classical and contemporary dancers aspire to. In fact, often dance has been integrated into these scenes in the many versions and over many centuries of the play’s performances.

This production of the Tshwane Dance Theatre (TCT) is generously supported by the South African National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.
