Welcome to the SA State Theatre
In the heart of the capital Pretoria the South African State Theatre is much more than just a complex of theatres. Functioning as a receiving house this unusual, stylish, centrally situated venue can accommodate almost any performance, function or special event.

It offers a variety of exciting venues for performances, conferences, festivals, product launches, fashion shows, film festivals, weddings, parties, matric dances and farewells, lunches and dinners. Attend world-class shows ranging from Opera, Ballet, Musical, Drama, Cabaret and Children's Theatre.

The complex also offers rehearsal studios and offices for rental.


History
The South African State Theatre saw the birth of, and was the driving force behind, the establishment of the performing arts in all spheres in South Africa. The Theatre today plays a leading role in the development of the performing arts, and is host to the colourful variety of entertainment found in the diverse cultures of our wonderful country.

The opening of the theatre complex in May 1981 was a milestone in South African theatre and marked the beginning of great things to come. In 2000 The Theatre re-opened as a receiving house a few years later, and has been host to blockbuster shows like Cats, Sarafina!, The Phantom of the Opera, The Sound of Music to name but a few. The South African State Theatre has an important and necessary part to play in the daily lives of everyone and is definitely here to stay!

Access to Information
This Manual* is published in terms of Section 14 of the Promotion of Access to Information Act, 2000 (Act No. 2 of 2000) ("the Act"). The Act gives effect to the provisions of Section 32 of the Constitution that provides for the right of access to information held by the State and to information held by another person that is required for the exercise and/or protection of any right.

The reference to any information in addition to that specifically required in terms of Section 14 of the Act does not create any right or entitlement (contractual or otherwise) to receive such information, other than in terms of the Act.

The South African State Theatre is defined in the Act as a public body, that encompasses any department of state or administration in the national or provincial sphere of government or any other function or institution thereof which exercises a power or performs a duty in terms of the Constitution or exercises a public power or performs a public function in terms of any legislation.

The South African State Theatre supports the constitutional right of access to information and we are committed to provide any requester to our records in accordance with the provisions of the Act.

We as The South African State Theatre have compiled this manual, not only to comply with the provisions of the Act, but also to foster a culture of transparency and accountability in our environment and to ensure that members of the public have effective access to information in our possession which will assist them in the exercise and protection of their rights.
