PRODUCTIONS TO PROVIDE OWN SOUND ENGINEER, LIGHTING DESIGNER, SET DESIGNER, AND STAGE MANAGER

The Arena, is the complex’s third largest theatre, and it can double as the main opera
rehearsal hall. There is no set seating in the Arena except for the 88 seats on the gallery. Movable and collapsible seating units can provide a further 200 seats for patrons. Fully equipped computerized
lighting and sound control rooms, form part of this highly sophisticated theatre. The auditorium has hosted several productions like Xova and Angola which won the Naledi Theatre Awards, it can also be
used for workshops and small concerts like a CD launch.

Stage

  1. The Arena main stage is 12m wide and 10m deep from the proscenium to the upstage.
  2. The Arena is equipped with a black velvet backdrop, masking wings and white cyclorama. Any other backdrops required for the production to be sourced at own cost. The production must provide a qualified stage manager to supervise all technical aspects of the production and to call the show for all performances and rehearsals.
  3. Set and décor pieces as well as any other piece of equipment used for the production is subject to a safety inspection by the State Theatre HSS manager who reserves the right to disallow any equipment or structure that is unsafe according to current legislation.

Sound

  1. Flown Nexo GEOS PA System.
  2. Midas Pro1 mixing console.

Decor

  • There is a variety of props available. The props can be seen after an appointment is made with, or enquiries made to the Décor department.

Props which are used on productions are stored on the side stages or in the props rooms next to the stage. Afterwards they are returned to the main props store which is in the basement of the building.

Lighting

  • The Drama theatre has a saturated lighting rig which is positioned on the stage as well as in the foyer roof. (copy available on request)
  • There is a Grand M.A. 2 Lighting desk.
  • There are two follow spots. (Productions need to provide follow spotters)
  • Any other lighting equipment required for the production to be sourced by the production at own cost.
