PRODUCTIONS TO PROVIDE OWN SOUND ENGINEER, LIGHTING DESIGNER, SET DESIGNER, AND STAGE MANAGER.

The Drama Theatre is an excellent venue for smaller drama productions. Designed with an orchestra pit that can accommodate up to 40 musicians, also makes it suitable for opera or musical productions. It has three foyer levels: a ground floor foyer with a Café/Restaurant; a main foyer with refreshment centres and a balcony mezzanine. The Drama Theatre has hosted international productions such as The Russian Ballet, original South African works in the calibre of the Naledi-Award winning Marikana the Musical as well as the local version of the musical talent search Idols SA.

Stage

The Drama main stage is 13m wide and 16.3m deep from the fire curtain to the upstage barrier. The orchestra pit in front of the fire curtain is 4.25m deep.
The side legs in the Opera are permanently hung to create 3 x wings for entrances and exits. There are side stages on each side.
The main stage consists of four stage lifts which can be raised 3.65m above stage level or lowered 11m below stage level. These lifts can move singly or in groups.

Sound

Mixing console: DiGiCo S21, Yamaha QL5 (client to confirm availability with sound store manager first).
PA System: Nexo Geo5805 system (12 per side),

7 x Nexo Geo5805 centre fills,

8 x Nexo CD12 Subs (4 x flown & 4 on the ground; per side)

Decor

There is a variety of props available. The props can be seen after an appointment is made with, or enquiries made to the Décor department.
Props which are used on productions are stored on the side stages or in the props rooms next to the stage. Afterwards they are returned to the main props store which is located in the basement of the building.
The Drama is equipped with dressing rooms located on two levels, a total of 12 dressing rooms of various sizes.

Lighting

The Drama theatre has a saturated lighting rig which is positioned on the stage as well as in the foyer roof. (copy available on request)
There is a Grand M.A. 2 Lighting desk.
There are two follow spots. (Productions need to provide follow spotters)
Any other lighting equipment required for the production to be sourced by the production at own cost.

Flying

The stage is equipped with 46 battens (movable fly bars) on which scenery can be hung. The permanent draping consists of a black velvet surround and a white projection screen that is 13.3m high by +- 15m wide.
