The After Effect
THE AFTER EFFECT
A gripping political thriller that exposes the true cost of power
Pretoria, South Africa – The South African State Theatre, in association with Script to Stage Productions, proudly presents The After Effect, a hard-hitting and emotionally charged stage production written by Tebogo Kobo and directed by Kamuhelo Mailula.
Presented as part of the Youth Expressions Festival, The After Effect will run at the Sibusiso Khwinana Theatre from 27 May to 07 June 2026, confronting audiences with a powerful interrogation of political ambition, moral compromise, and the long shadows cast by decisions made in the pursuit of power.
Set against the backdrop of a fragile post-conflict society, The After Effect explores what happens after the slogans fade, the banners fall, and the promises are broken. Through two sharply drawn characters standing on opposite sides of history, the production asks urgent questions about accountability, loyalty, and the human cost of political violence. In a world where revolutions often replace one form of oppression with another, the play dares to ask who truly pays the price.
With its tense atmosphere, psychologically driven performances, and unapologetic political voice, The After Effect speaks directly to contemporary South African and global realities. It resonates strongly with young audiences while remaining deeply relevant to anyone grappling with questions of leadership, justice, and the unfinished business of democracy.
The production reinforces the South African State Theatre’s commitment to bold, socially responsive storytelling that challenges audiences to think critically about the world they inhabit. As part of the Youth Expressions Festival, it amplifies young voices and places pressing national conversations at the centre of the stage.
The After Effect is recommended for audiences aged 13 years and older and runs for a limited season.
