As die Tuig Skawe: A Haunting Afrikaans Drama of Love, Obsession and Betrayal Comes to the South African State Theatre

A gripping psychological drama explores the fragile line between hope and destruction in a powerful reimagining of post-war South Africa.
Pretoria, South Africa – Love has the power to heal.
It also has the power to destroy.
This September, the South African State Theatre proudly presents As die Tuig Skawe, a compelling Afrikaans drama that delves into the complexities of love, obsession, grief and desire. Running from 21 to 27 September 2026 at the Arena Theatre, this emotionally charged production invites audiences into a world where passion and ambition collide with devastating consequences.

Presented by The Third Law (Pty) Ltd, As die Tuig Skawe is a gripping theatrical experience that blends psychological tension, powerful performances and striking visual storytelling to create a production that lingers long after the final curtain call.

Set in a remote, sun-scorched corner of post-war South Africa, the story follows Krissie Obrien, a woman trapped in a marriage sustained more by survival than by love. Her husband, Gert, desperately clings to dreams of redemption and stability, while Krissie struggles beneath years of disappointment, sacrifice and emotional isolation.

Everything changes with the unexpected return of Fred Moller, a wealthy bachelor whose presence rekindles forgotten desires and opens the door to dangerous possibilities. Charming, charismatic and increasingly possessive, Fred offers Krissie what appears to be an escape from her unhappy life. But as emotions intensify and loyalties begin to fracture, hope slowly transforms into obsession.

Over the course of one devastating weekend, relationships unravel, long-buried emotions erupt and tragedy unfolds in ways that will forever alter the lives of everyone involved.

Reimagined through a modern Gothic lens, As die Tuig Skawe is far more than a story about love. It is a powerful exploration of longing, control, grief and the human desire to escape circumstances that seem impossible to change. The production asks timeless questions about choice, consequence and whether the pursuit of happiness can sometimes come at an unbearable cost.

Directed and produced by Lara Lourens, the production brings together an accomplished creative team and talented cast committed to delivering an emotionally rich and visually captivating theatrical experience. Through intimate storytelling, atmospheric staging and compelling performances, the production creates a world where every silence carries meaning and every decision brings audiences closer to an unforgettable conclusion.

Featuring Lizelle Pike as Krissie, Kaz McFadden as Fred, Sallas de Jager as Gert, Christo Beer as Teuns and Kristin Naudé as Marie, the cast brings extraordinary emotional depth and authenticity to a story that explores the complexities of relationships and the fragile nature of the human heart.
The South African State Theatre continues its commitment to presenting diverse productions that celebrate South Africa's multilingual storytelling traditions while showcasing exceptional artistic talent. As die Tuig Skawe forms part of this vision, offering audiences a thought-provoking Afrikaans production that speaks to universal human emotions through powerful theatre.

Whether you are an admirer of Afrikaans theatre, psychological drama or compelling storytelling, As die Tuig Skawe promises an unforgettable theatrical experience that will challenge perceptions, stir emotions and spark meaningful conversations.
This is more than a drama.
It is a portrait of human longing.
